Next release of Mastodon will allow admins to post important announcements to their users, and yes, those are reactions

To other Mastodon sysadmins: Check what pg_repack can do for you, especially if your server has been around for a really long time. PostgreSQL indexes get bloated over time and VACUUM does nothing about it. pg_repack can re-build indexes without downtime.

I've made the language list on joinmastodon.org update for every category you select and only show languages with servers in them along with a count of how many

I’m aware image uploads are still broken. There is nothing i can do right now, unfortunately, as it is due to our service provider (Wasabi). Sorry for the inconvenience. I intend to change the service provider as soon as possible and have made preparations for it.

Help translate #Mastodon into your language here:
https://crowdin.com/project/mastodon
The 3.0 release is coming really soon now so there isn't much time left but I will definitely import the latest translations right before.

When you're scrolled down, new items at the top are now hidden behind "x new items" (regardless of "slow mode" setting). The benefit is less scrolling glitches.

For whatever reason Chrome 78 (Canary) decided to make all placeholder text dark, despite `color: #fff` on the inputs
What the fuck, Google

My dream for Mastodon is for it to be a viable choice as a publishing platform for any creator. In other words, for people to not feel like they're locked in to Twitter or Instagram if they want to be professionally successful.

mastodon.social is updated to latest master! New user-facing things:
You can load more search results, you can use "phrase match" in search and exclude words or phrases by prepending a minus; new users see a minimal UI and are able to change their e-mail before confirming e-mail/getting approved; autosuggestions for hashtags show up and show how much each tag has been used in the past week; probably other stuff I forgot
Other: mastodon.social is also now no longer compatible with OStatus

The reason Mastodon doesn't keep original uploaded files but rather converts them to more space-efficient formats/dimensions is that storage is not cheap for the average server owner, and we try to reduce the pressure on them as much as possible.
We could think about keeping high-fidelity originals if an upload quota feature was added (configurable max. disk space per user). This is non-binding poll to see if that's a direction worth pursuing.
