@TheKinrar Yes, I do not fully understand it. At first I was told Dwango wasn't doing well financially and friends.nico was a big cost sink without contributing back to their main business. That, I can understand. But when I suggested ways to decrease their costs, they said that would not help reverse course.

Some servers today require Patreon or OpenCollective membership to sign up on, or integrate a Stripe button (but not very well). The above idea would basically formalize those use cases.

This is not something that could actually help friends.nico survive, but the thought is inspired by their situation:

Phew, can't believe I finally got to release v2.8.0rc1. The release candidate phase usually lasts about a week. That will line up somewhat with Keybase's announcement around April 8th

I can't quite relax yet because I need to write a blog post to my patrons (and that doesn't have to wait until the RC phase it over), I also need to prepare a public blog post for the full release...

A fun thing I have yet to do: Sift through 300 commit messages to write a human-readable changelog for Mastodon 2.8.0

I wanted to mandate that every PR must add a line to the changelog on their own, but I didn't, and now it's payback time babey

As I understand, Dwango has not been doing too well financially and while they have previously expanded into providing various services including a Mastodon server (friends.nico), now they are shutting down all ventures that don't bring revenue

I'm sad because they've got an amazing domain name, super cute elephant drawings, I have spoken to their engineers over video, they invited me to Tokyo (although I didn't go, I attended over teleconference)

I am really rather sad about the friends.nico news ?

The 2.8 release is almost ready. I've got one feature left to merge, and a few things about existing features to tweak. Then it will, as always, enter a release candidate stage where more tweaks will happen, giving time to translators to submit translations, etc.

I had planned 2 more big features for 2.8, and came up with one more spontanously, but they can wait. I need the mental checkpoint of a stable release.
