@vee also the most ideal weapon to defend a home in a large flat area is probably an automatic rifle. Pistols advantage is concealment and convenience and you don't need to conceal anything if you're at home.
The Stinger is one of the first implementations of a concept known today as the Squad Automatic Weapon. Before WW2, machine guns were mostly stationary weapons and used by specialist squads of soldiers trained to do all the tasks needed to make a MG effective. a MG squad would typically have a gunner and then several support people to do things like supply and feed ammunition into the gun, change overheated barrels and protect the gunners position. Having a Squad Automatic Weapon means that a lighter and more portable machine gun is distributed for each squad of soldiers, drastically increasing the firepower available to a squad at any given time. The (relatively) light weight, emphasis on rate of fire over accuracy and portability of the Stinger gun were features optimized for the very close range and heavily fortified battlefield of iwo jima. Remember that in 1940's, there were far less options for reliable and portable firepower. most american soldiers would be using semi automatic rifles or small submachineguns not capable of suppressing the enemy for very long. Statistics taken from WW2 would eventually lead to the SAW concept being adopted in time for the Korean War and has now mostly supplanted the earlier specialized machine gun squad philosophy.
The weird frankengun that the US marines made days before fighting in Iwo Jima would become the spiritual ancestor of the modern SAW gun.
