somewhat a legitimate concern tho
at least on the side of streaming stuff, and artificial restrictions of thought policing that hinder the creation of optimal video codecs and the use of more bandwidth-optimal strategies for the transfer of those data, further inflating what is already, by more than an order of magnitude (quoted in 2015, and definitely more now), the largest piece of the internet's everything
and the way these artificial restrictions necessitate the manufacture of millions of otherwise useless devices, the sole purpose (for existing as distinct entities rather than as software on existing devices) of which is to enforce thought policing, thus needlessly consuming rare earths etc (and encouraging human rights abuses to boost production rates, though that's a side issue) and producing mountains of difficult to process garbage
and the way the "binge-watching" culture itself is a phenomenon directly created by this thought policing, which allows certain monopolising entities to have direct control over our modern mythological figures (spider-man *is* today's achilles, ironman today's odysseus and so on), effectively enslaving the minds / creative interests of the generations who grew up constantly hearing about, reading about, discussing, and watching cartoons and playing with action figures about these characters, these monopolising entities being the sole arbiters of how these modern mythological figures are portrayed, allowing them then to, in absence of any competition, maximise their cost-benefit ratio by churning out as much garbage as they can forever and there will always be people who pay them for it, as they've already invested their lives and childhoods in these characters and cannot give them up, and by producing this mountain of garbage have thus helped into existence a breed of "media consumer" who is disaffected but has nowhere to turn, and so watches endlessly and without thinking, as there's nothing left in what is watched to think about, driving the rate of "consumption" to ever greater heights and consuming unnecessarily, and significantly, more of the earth's resources in doing so (massive chilled datacentres for cdns are not "environmentally light-weight") -

stuff you obvs know, and probably anyone else who might read this and care, but
pgp is a terrible choice for chat, using a single-point-of-failure good-forever key rather than a ratcheting system of transients
and the fact that keybase has so much pushed chat as "their usecase"
coupled with their trying to get users to let them "just store for you" their private keys
has always seemed very suspect
trying to intercept that "i am a reddit user and am vaguely aware that computers exist" demographic's vague thoughts about encryption
this new development might indicate that that things didn't turn out as well as hoped, adoption rates etc, and so they're willing to instead risk that userbase's goodwill in exchange for marketing revenue from what i guess is the latest new-and-failing cryptocurrencycashgrab, trying, in turn, to revive themselves for long enough to get some return on investment

it was midnight, and i was sitting on a bench on the train. and a 50-something-old-white-couple sat down next to me
i was riding home, at midnight, on the train, and was feeling not-so-bad and not-so-well, and the lights ran by outside, and the dark was there between them
and a man came on the train, and he had no shirt and had taken methamphetamines and was wearing that particular face that is particular to someone who has taken methamphetamines and probably also a good deal of cheap whisky or similar drink and is wandering around a city at midnight and is in the range of 20-something to 30-something and is not happy about his life in general and is a man
and he sat on the other side from me over the wall of 50-something-old-white-couple and there was a buffer zone. and i began to feel old things were rising to the surface
and the barrier moved, making disapproving noises
and the man was sitting next to me, and my mind was gone and i was in the corner of the train and was curled there, in the corner, and was hearing with some part of me that could not touch the rest the barrier had taken an interest in me and now was saying things like "probably that girl has been abused before, don't you think? yes, probably, that's probably why that girl has reacted so strongly just now, and now is curled in the corner of the train", and that was all

something very interesting about this spread is how it managed even to fossilise much of that academic community from above. so that now there are reactionaries who attack perceived reactionaries in a reactionary manner. who are intolerant of perceived intolerance and dehumanise perceived dehumanisers and so on
