Is it right that both the state and the media are dependent on a private company, much less a privately held company run by a major shareholder? What can we do?

Well, it may not work.But it should give us some food for thought.

However, no matter how reasonable this system is, everyone is using Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube nowadays, so the only option is to transmit to them.

Therefore, the fact that a large organization like the EU is starting to communicate in this way could be a trigger and a big push to change the world.

Coincidentally, we are witnessing a major change with the acquisition of Twitter.

We just need to make sure that it is a real source and not an official mark that Twitter puts on it.

This means that not only governments, but also news media, artists, etc., do not need to be bound to a platform in order to own their own content and share it with the world.

They can prove their authenticity because they are transmitted from their own servers and cannot be erased without their permission.

They can own and disseminate content with their own responsibility and authority, rather than having to look at the platform's face.

It is a natural choice for governments and administrative agencies to operate Mastodon on their own.

We, the general users or citizens, can create our own accounts in any location, follow the services of servers that provide public services, and see what is retweeted.

There is news that the EU has set up a Mastodon server. PeerTube has also been set up for video streaming.

It may look like they are trying to gather people and turn it into a platform, but that is not what this is about.

This is the establishment of a server for official announcements and information dissemination, which ordinary users cannot register.

The merit of this system is that organizations and individuals who disseminate information can send out official content on their own.

以下は私の解釈です。

EUは、EU以外が提供するプラットフォームに依存して情報発信をしていては独立性が確保できないため、自らの手で発信しようとしています。

そして、広告をはさまず、個人情報を解析させない、プライバシーとデータを保護する代替のソーシャルメディアを提供しようとしています。

この役割を果たすものとして、今回はマストドン（Mastodon）とPeerTubeが選ばれたようです。

マストドンはTwitterの代替、PeerTubeはYouTubeの代替となるシステムです。

いずれも、ActivityPubと呼ばれる、SNSをWebのような分散型で実現するプロトコルに基づいて設計された、実績のある仕組みです。

これは政府・行政に限ったことではなく、ニュースメディアも、アーティストも、自分自身のコンテンツを自らで保有し、世界に発信するために、プラットフォームに囲われる必要がないことを意味します。

自分のサーバから発信するのですから、勝手に消されたりしないし、本物を証明できるのです。

ただし、これがどんなに合理的な仕組みでも、いまはみな、TwitterやFacebook、YouTubeを使っていますから、そこに向けて発信するしか選択肢がありません。

ですから、EUのような大きな組織がこうした方法で発信を始めるというのは、世界を変えるきっかけ、大きな後押しになる可能性があります。

奇しくも我々は、Twitterの買収という大きな変化を目の当たりにしています。

私企業、まして大株主による非公開企業の運営の元に、国家もメディアも依存している構造で良いのか。我々にできることは何か。

そうそう、うまくはいかないかもしれません。でも、考えるヒントにはなるはずです。

EUがマストドンサーバを開設したニュースがでています。動画配信用にPeerTubeも設置しています。

これ、何か人を集めてプラットフォームにしようと企んでいるように見えたかもしれませんが、そういうことではありません。

一般のユーザーは登録できない、公式発表・情報発信を担うサーバの開設です。

この仕組みのメリットは、情報発信する組織や個人が、自分で公式のコンテンツを発信できるということ、

プラットフォームの顔色を窺うのではなく、自分自身の責任と権限でコンテンツを保有し、情報発信できるということです。

政府・行政機関がマストドンを自分で運用するのは当然の選択と言えます。

我々一般のユーザー・あるいは国民は、それぞれ自分のアカウントを自由な場所に作成し、そこから公共サービスを提供しているサーバのサービスをフォローしたり、リツイートされてきたものをみる形で利用します。

Twitterがつける公式マークではなく、本物の発信元であるかを確認すれば良いのです。

@akkiesoft Mastodonの、初期フォローの推奨リストにあっきーさん載ってるんじゃない？

ログインしてアイコン設定する前にフォロー促されるんで、そうなりがちなんじゃないかなと。

TwitterをMastodonに置き換えられるかをサーバの収容能力から考えてみます。できるだけ単純な算数でいきます。想像しやすいように国内想定で。

Twitterの国内の月間アクティブユーザーが2017年10月で4,500万人という話があり、まあ、ざっくりいま5,000万人いるとしましょう。

Mastodonの国内の月間アクティブユーザーは、上位から足していってみるとざっくり5万人ぐらい。

つまり現在は、0.1%、1000倍ぐらいですね。

最大規模のPawooでMAUは2万5千人ぐらい。Pawooが20個あれば50万人。ようやく1%受け入れられるかな。

Pawoo20個がちょっと難しいとすると、まあそこそこ大きめのサーバが100個ぐらいは必要かもしれません。

このへんをベースに、もっと大規模サーバが必要だとか、サーバが1万あったらサーバ間通信（連合）はちゃんと成立するのかとか、いろいろ考えていくわけです。

実は発信者の割合がうんと少なく、そのうちヘビーな人も案外少なく、想定より簡単かもしれません。

なるほどTwitterすげーなーとあらためて思うところでもありますw
