@tk More from that times about Laconica:
mcscx favorited something by lohang: @spaceman 1) I am not a programmer. When Laconica was launched I was already a free software user. I heard about Laconica during those epic Twitter downtimes in 2008. Lot of people were looking for alternatives. If I remember correctly, Laconica was first mentioned on Linux Outlaws podcast. They discussed the importance of having distributed and federated social network; and about avoiding single points of failures. Soon I became one of the early users of #Laconica ( #identica ) Laconica was later renamed as StatusNet. It then became GNUSocial as a result of the merging of StatusNet and Free Social projects.
1. For Android 9+ only: Animations of animated images are shown by default. Both in attachments and in avatars. GIF and WebP are supported. Settings -> Appearance -> "Show image animations" option allows to turn this behavior off. It appears that currently only ActivityPub and Pump.io networks (i.e. server parts of them) support WebP and keep GIFs as is. Other servers simply reject WebP and convert GIFs to video... https://github.com/andstatus/andstatus/issues/330
2. Animated images and video on Twitter are shown as preview image with a "Play" button on it. This is the same behavior as for other social networks.
3. "Play" button on a video preview image is moved to the bottom corner to allow better view of the image.
4. Screen orientation is not "unspecified", as before, but is set to "The user's current preferred orientation", set by a User for the whole Android device. In particular, this allows to use landscape mode on smartphones (and not on tablets only, as before). https://loadaverage.org/attachment/5948838
#AndStatus v.56.09 (326) released. "Show numbers of likes, replies and reblogs for a Note 1. Show numbers of likes, replies and reblogs for Mastodon; likes and retweets for Twitter. Added similar to #ActivityPub #C2S, hope the same counters will be supported there also. 2. Added Actors's name ("Real name") as a separate field to Actor's profile. Created landscape layout for Actor's profile. https://loadaverage.org/attachment/5933715
1. Simplified nterface to add new account in #Mastodon. You don't need to add "Social network" separately. Just type (host of) instance and proceed to Log in.
2. Fixed "App language" switch. Many translation updates.
Since its creation years ago AndStatus used only one background process (thread) to post and to download information from the Internet. Images downloads were considered low priority tasks, so avatars and attachments appeared noticeably later than text of a timeline, especially when multiple timelines and accounts were synced one after one. With this release a separate process is responsible for images downloading, so overall syncing performance improvement should be visible.
1. This release was focused on supporting new and improved #ActivityPub features that appeared both in #Pleroma and, surprisingly, in #Mastodon also. You can really start experimenting with ActivityPub social network type if you have an account at Pleroma site with latest v.2.x Pleroma builds... Posting with image attachments works.
2. Mastodon (not AndStatus!) doesn't give you enough features to switch client connection to ActivityPub simply because Home timeline and posting via ActivityPub connection is not supported yet (corresponding pages give 404 Not found error). But you can see our own posts on Mastodon servers and navigate to other Actors and their post via them (you can see profiles of other Actors and see their posts...). You can even play with Mastodon as an "ActivityPub" type Social network in AndStatus today! But prepare to see empty Home timeline and to be read-only there for now. Switch to "Sent" timeline and see your Actor's posts, see other actors and their posts similarly... These new Mastodon improvements make me very optimistic about the future of ActivityPub in client apps across all server platforms.
3. Some important fixes, including more Avatars and Images will be shown.
4. More convenience for developers. Logging of network level messages (including response headers) improved. Even file names with responses are much clearer now, e.g. 2020-04-25-03-34-51-663_social.tulsa.ok.us-oauth_register_client_response.json or 2020-04-25-03-35-02-235_mastodon.technology-get_actor_response.json (real names from my log). Remember that logs are stored for 10 days and can be optionally included in a Backup!
@panko AndStatus may tell that credentials belong to another user even when case of any letter in a username that you typed differs from a username, returned from a server @administrator
@diogo Thank you for your explanation. Now I really see a page on the loadaverage site that tells its server version. And #AndStatus still successfully connects to the server (I'm writing to you using it). This means that the authentication problem that I reported is caused by a configuration of a concrete server, and not by the latest version of #GnuSocial :-)
Using a chance to talk with you, I hope that you will find time for Client-to-Server #ActivityPub API also. I'm extending support of that API in AndStatus, and already see that not only #Pleroma, but even some #Mastodon sites begin to implement some parts of the API, allowing a Client app to request information directly from its sources, without a need to duplicate it. E.g. Notes by an Actor may be requested from the Actor's profile (from the Actor's outbox) at his site, and not from the server, at which the User of the Client app has an account...
There are no changes planned in V2 regarding existing APIs so, if it isn't working and it was in a prior version, that means we have either accidentally added a bug or some plugin in the faulty instance is somehow interfering :-(
Every GNU social installation has a doc concerning its APIs at instance.tld/doc/twitterapi, as seen, e.g., in: https://loadaverage.org/doc/api
If this problem is present in LoadAverage, please open an issue with instructions to reproduce this, so that we can further debug and get this fixed asap!; Otherwise, please ask the affected instance's sysadmin to open an issue requesting for help, so that we can assist them getting their instance back to normal :)
@diogo @xrevan86 Oops, I see that 404 error was due to the wrong domain :-). But my questions regarding API changes and their descriptions are still valid: now authentication fails with 401 error and I simply don't know, where to look at? Any reference client app/tool to lookup?! @colegota@quitter.es
@xrevan86 @diogo One of users reported that #AndStatus app doesn't work with the new #GnuSocial server "v.2.0..x dev". I started investigation and see that /api/statusnet/config.json API point now returns 404. Looking in current Source code of the server I see that the API is documented now as /api/gnusocial/config.json - but that returns 404 also...
So the question is did Client API change radically or the server is simply broken, or... ? And where can we see any info on Client to Server API changes / current docs? @colegota
Interesting, AndStatus has a generic ActivityPub instance type now. It seems limited in how well it works with splergoma which only serves as more proof that splergoma is merely a client of the Mastodon® social network™ now, built up with porn money, hookers and blow.
In any case, AndStatus works great nowadays and doesn't crash like dedicated dead elephant clients. I like it~
Attachment provided as a deterrent for some. It would be very funny if it didn't work though :smug2: /document/image:3102.jpg
