All federated protocols suffer from fragmentation issues. Even email. E.g. my mail client doesn't support HTML emails, Other clients do not OpenPGP.

XMPP has at least feature discovery ("disco"), e.g. my client can see, if your client does support A/V call. If not, it won't show the phone receiver symbol.

(Tonight I will hack on either #sms4you or on #libervia Debian packaging.)

I'm using #Jabber #XMPP since even before Signal existed.

I can't use Signal, because

1. It does not run (well) on my OSes (Debian & Mobian), only Android and iOS

2. They want my phone number and I don't like to hand it out

3. They don't let me choose the server location, only Amazon AWS

#Gajim 1.5.1 arrived in #Debian testing (12, bookworm).

Unfortunately, backports for #Debian stable (11, bullseye) had to be reverted to 1.4.7, because dependency #GTK 3.24.30 cannot not be satisfied at the moment.
