(I was in a thread earlier talking about adblocking, and someone called it content theft.)
Like, if I made a film my options for distributing things are:
Free via:
- Peertube
- Archive.org
- Vimeo
- Direct Download
Ad supported via:
- Youtube
- Amazon
- Vimeo
Paid (with DRM) via:
- Amazon
Paid (without DRM) via
- Vimeo
- Direct download
That's pretty much it, as far as I can tell.
Clearly direct download is a solid option, but it severely limits discoverability.
Vimeo was, at one point, a decent option, but they mostly sell Rentals now.
My least favorite part about new folks logging in is the DM panic.
“Oh no, my DMs are unencrypted and can be read by the instance moderators and admins.”
“... just like every other social platform you’ve ever used, plus most email platforms.”
“Well, yeah, but on those other platforms the admins are a team of underpaid entry level employees at a faceless company, not a single person or small group of individuals that’s I can get to know”
“...right.”
