あんず従来の知能指数は「精神年齢 ÷ 生活年齢 × 100」の式で算出される。知能指数は100に近いほど出現率が高い（人数が多い）。50–70は軽度知的障害、35–50は中度知的障害、20–35は重度知的障害、20未満は最重度知的障害とされるが、40未満を測れない検査も多い。
