   Please don't demand content warnings from strangers. Content warnings are a sort of social contract between an author and their followers; if you are not happy with how someone chooses to use them, do not follow that person or outright mute them, or mute words.

   One of the most alienating experiences on Mastodon I've observed is when someone posts about something they're passionate about or is part of their identity and the first response is "please cw that" from a complete stranger.

     @Toroja I think that's splitting hairs about what I said, isn't it. You can run a community where the letter e is forbidden but if you demand that people on other servers also don't use the letter e, then what I said applies. Control what you see vs how others post it.

     @homer77 Most people don't post "to" the public timelines, everything is technically directed at followers. The public timelines are a cross-section, a way to look at the whole thing, and incidentally it feels like a chatroom sometimes, but it's not. Not everyone who is in it is even aware that they're in it.

     They're still so important for getting started with mastodon, defaulting to unlisted is not an option, I think.

     The way everything intersects on mastodon is novel and complicated.

     @h I feel like you're misreading something a lot. It's not like we have a "cw your nazism" policy, we have a "if you post nazi shit you get banned" policy, so that's completely irrelevant.

     Specifically mastodon.social does not have and never had a policy on CWing anything other than porn and gore. Especially no policy against journalism or serious talk or anything like that.
