@mono so you're saying a lack of nationalism causes school shootings? daring.
-
@lain unironically yes.
>There was a phenomenon in the 18th and 19th century that suicidal young men, not wanting to damn their immortal souls and suffer a post Mortum social death , would join the army and seek out the most dangerous assignments or be really cavalier with their insults to try and provoke a fatal duel (a good example of this dynamic is Robert Lovelace in Clarissa (played by young Sean Bean in the movie)). These people could often inadvertently move history since, not caring about their life, they could achieve ridiculous military upsets or tactical advantages, or wind up killing someone important in duel (The Dualists with Harvey kietel by Ridley Scott, is a good example of this.Keitel is an Officer with an obvious death wish whose killed something like 30 other officers in duels, before he meets the protagonist and they have a sequence of duels across the napoleonic wars, it’s quite well done with a good ending spoiler the protagonist gets the better of Kietel and leaves him honor bound to never challenge anyone again) (Assassination of Jesse James is also a good example of this)
>We might be seeing a similar dynamic with violent extremism. Now instead of committing suicide or murder suicide and being considered a sad loser by only your friends and family, you can strike a dramatic blow for your preferred political cause and join the ranks of the globally known monsters/martyrs (depending on your sympathies)
