filenames are visible on a desktop
attach that file to a post
why should it be more consistent/sensical that that filename not appear there as well?
and the precedent here seems muddy at best. it's visible when using file-sharing websites and utilities. it's visible when attached to a forum post. and you've already mentioned image boards
this sort of "intuitive" doesn't hold even for "experienced" people, because experiences vary too widely
aside from that, then, if the purpose of pleroma is to facilitate hanging it out and having fun with friends, to me it seems to make sense that the default behaviour (sure something that could be user-configurable, though) should encourage that; and having filenames shown encourages being creative with them

eh, "everyone else is (not) doing it", feels like some degree of "culture" is nice to have, fine let people opt out, but being presented with something they've not seen before, can get people thinking in new ways, even something so small as that

user-configurable makes sense, but computer stuff is never innately intuitive to anyone

(being honest, i'd never before used software that *didn't* keep filenames that way before testing mastodag, and wasn't really aware they even existed. so yeh, varied experiences varied experiences...
