     they used to represent wi and we respectively, but a sound shift left them being pronounced as i and e (similar to how を is pronounced as o)
     
     so they got purged, only to be used in historical or pretentious things

     @rizzo uhp-pretty sure genji no monogatari is slightly… older than the entire idea of manga

     the only places i’m personally aware of them in use is in their katakana forms in: ウヰスキー(uisuki~, whiskey)　ヱヴァンゲリオン(evangelion)
