Just how many people are brainwashed to think that every worthwhile job needs a 4 year degree?
-
@eal it doesn't explain the people who don't yet have a degree, and are willing to take on tons of debt at the start of their adult lives for a degree. I just heard someone seriously claim that you need a 4 year degree for the dumbest entry level jobs.

@eal
It makes sense for it to be advantageous, but there's still that opportunity cost that I feel isn't considered as much as it should be. What you're saying makes sense for good, well-paying degrees, but I see people getting into and finishing degrees with a horrible return on investment, and it can get really horrible.
It just makes me sad...

@march @eal it's more the fault of employers
a lot of them won't even consider you without a degree, and universities use this as a marketing tactic
of course not all do, but quite a lot of jobs *do*. heck it's seen as radical when some of them say "or equivalent experience"

@Chuculate In the Philippines most degrees are four year. All engineering courses here at my uni are 5 years long, except for compsci which is 4 for some reason. They're changing the curriculums across the board to make it 4 for everyone, though. Good deal, less time spent the better.
Six is way too long... That's six years of minimum wage opportunity cost at the very least, since you could be promoted during those six years.
