   @Olivia standup didn't proliferate much outside the realm of televized specials back then. you actually had to go out and pay to watch it. the number of people who actually saw Eddie Murphy perform is a lot less than the number of people who saw his movies. raunchy comedians can transition to family friendly because because their standup careers are relatively obscure (compared to movies) and because a lot of roles like this are suggestions from other comedians who were a part of the scene who already "made it" in the mainstream
