DirectX started as a project called win/g on windows 3, an attempt to make an abstraction layer for games because DOS owned the action game market on PC completely. It was literally laughable at the time because windows ran its native graphics like shit even on the best machine, literally not fixed until Vista.

@ooignignoktoo I don't know much about directx on the xbox except that on the original and the 360, sometimes devs got special dispensation to bypass even directx to achieve higher performance, but this isn't possible on the xbone because it virtualizes everything for security.

@clacke win/g was only graphics while directx was a whole bunch of stuff, correct they were separate codebases, win/g was their first whack at the same problem.
