@lain @augustus curious about this though, and foundobvs nuance flies out the window once "public opinion" and "politics" become involved, but the counter-claims here seem pretty extreme. saying "no role", rather than "insignificant" or "negligible", and am wondering is it reactionary?, or do they have a reason for claiming the greenhouse effect is just not a thing, in which case heck is up with venus?, like know there's way more pressure at surface level, but even up at earth-equiv pressure zones it's apparently markedly more hot2020-1596194614.png2020-1596194621.png2020-1596194847.png -

@lain one cool thing that gets lost on people is that a lot of narratives you hear about evolved through continuous selection process, and are not just one static thing being pushed by one group or other, you have institutions that get more budget and financing when they can prove an immediate emergency that select for sensational sounding stories which creates mass panic and puts pressure on the people who allocate more money to the people who were pushing the stories and the feedback loop just keeps growing with seemingly no limiting principle -

@lain @augustus can't comment on this further, not knowing how much .72AU vs 1AU affects things, or how back radiation differs when it's coming from lower-down gasses, but -

@augustus @lain or actually, solar radiation and distance bit should just be approximately inverse-square law, right?intensity at earth is apparently 1367 watts / metre^2, so1367 * 1^2 = i_v * .72^2, or i_v = 2637w / m^2so i guess solar intensity is about doubled. comparing "average temperatures" is obviously a mess, because of seasons etc, but 75/2 == 37.5C is still pretty hot for most people? (though it's that hot here right now at 4am)then have to account for venus being a bit smaller, .9 earth's surface area. shouldn't affect much, butdunno, too stupid to take this further XX -

@shmibs @lain > The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has also stated that "a 'runaway greenhouse effect'—analogous to [that of] Venus—appears to have virtually no chance of being induced by anthropogenic activities."[27] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_greenhouse_effectalso CO2 lags temperature, not the other way around, Lake Vostok data showed this バツ子(痛いの痛いの飛んでけ;; likes this. -

@lain @augustus presumably from the series of probes russia launched into venus. i think like a few burnt up in-atmosphere while measuring and then two of them made it to the surface successfullyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venera -

@lain @augustus ah, you're right, mmm; should be geothermal stuff contributing? thought venus' magnetosphere was dead, hmm -

@shmibs @augustus no, i mean, is this the temperature at 50 km height in your example? if so, i don't think you can just divide by two, the zero point of the celsius scale is not the zero point of a planets temperature without sun -
