>masks don't work>masks are mandatory>anti-vaccine protesters are helping spread the virus with their gatherings>BLM protesters actually slowed the virus down by attending demos>the real pandemic is racismhow the fuck is any sane person supposed to make sense of any of this

@augustus > simple cloth masks, or anything else short of a well-fitted medical-grade mask worn from the moment you leave the door to the moment you return, and then immediately discarded (or maybe left in a sealed "used" hamper for a week or something), followed by lots of scrubbing, won't effectively protect you> but people wearing masks of pretty much any kind (higher-quality is better, but; and not really one that doesn't bother filtering exhalation) will decrease the likelihood of their infecting others, and increase the chance of any infection that does take place being mild> in-charge people saw there were too few medical-grade masks for medical workers to stay appropriately protected, and decided to lie to everyone because "we can't trust them to not be selfish and buybuybuy them all"> plan backfires something terribly, and masks are mandated as an attempt at damage control (again because "people are too stupid to actually understand this stuff even if we explain it to them")> BLM protesting crowds are essentially all mask-wearing, and their presence dissuades all the people who would otherwise be crowding up in bars and restaurants, resulting somewhat counter-intuitively in an overall decrease in spread> anti-vaccine protesters correlate strongly with the anti-mask crowd, and their grouping does not dissuade other people from meeting, yielding a net spread-positive> that last bit, dunno, maybe the endless obsession over things like race is one of the things causing this whole mess, "if you were *black* you'd know *real* suffering", "i may be poor, but at least i'm *white*" etc, empathy barrier that prevents cooperation

@shmibs i lose maximum respect for you even attempting to rationalise the "BLM crowds good, anti-vax crowds bad" thing
-
@augustus just an interesting phenomenon. no "morality" or "ideology"
-
@shmibs if you say so

@augustus if you want that sort of opinion, i dislike the "racial exceptionalism" that seems to place certain peoples' suffering above others' because "identity", think it's both counterproductive to the "in" group and actively hurting the "out" groupnot at all a fan of the extreme/unnecessary police violence stuff either, though
