      @ProfWorr Lebanon has been having protests about garbage service since 2015, trash has just been piling up since then.

      @Moon @djsumdog @ProfWorr been like constant warring / terror / syrian occupation stuff for half a decade, so can't really be helped; not been time in there for settling and infrastructure

      @djsumdog @ProfWorr @shmibs from what I've read it's a very corrupt and disorganized government.

      @shmibs @ProfWorr @djsumdog oh I almost forgot the connection. Since they have all those problems they've been doing nothing and the trash has just started piling up everywhere, polluting everything and making people sick.

      @Moon @ProfWorr @shmibs I guess it's that lack of foresight which also lead to leaving a several metric tons of volatile fertilizer chemicals without safeguards in a warehouse for years?

      @shmibs @ProfWorr @djsumdog Well, let me rephrase. It's a political problem. The government doesn't have a comprehensive strategy for dealing with solid waste, hasn't been approving new landfills (as I understand it) because their existing ones predated international requirements and new ones would be comparatively difficult and costly to establish; doesn't have widespread recycling and has a generally wasteful attitude toward product design. Most of their waste isn't suitable for incineration and their technology level isn't such that it can produce clean-ish emissions.This is how I understand it from reading some articles on it.
