     @lain @mia eh, it becomes trust in people rather than video clips, which is becoming progressively more a thing simultaneously as people carry telephones everywhere and get in the habit of filming constantlyand, for big events, there tend to be multiple sourcesmaybe "nothing from a state actor or news station" will be trust-able, but not the same as nothing

     @lain @mia i understand, yes. normal people can make such an edit. but those normal people, unlike state/company/news-network can be people you're aware of and to some extent trustand multiple corroborating videos from independent people makes things strongerof course can't just take things blindly, but it's a matter of degrees, rather than all-or-nothing. photo editing has had a significant headstart, por ejemplo, but they're still useful

     @shmibs @mia no, i'm talking about normal people being able to do these kinds of manipulations as well, so it's not just state actors or companies but also every private person you don't know.it's kind of a step back towards how things were before photography and videos, so it's not actually a new situation.

     @lain @mia and e2e has been made usable now at least to some degree for those normal people, and feels there will be, once the first few high-profile cases of fakery are well known, somewhat stronger popular motivation behind proof of identity than there is behind encryption, so feels at least possible, integrated into some or other fancy application

     @lain @shmibs @mia there will be big money for the first company to announce signed, verifiable video formats.the problem will be who runs the trust database (i.e., CA certs)so some people are going to get very rich and then we'll find out in about 10 years that governments were forging shit and signing it with stolen keys, etc.
