@sean the fediverse is a great place for actual free speech, on your own terms. We'll have to take people away from gab's walled garden. They defederated because they were afraid that people would go to sites like free speech extremist or any other site in the fediverse that isn't just a "conservative" echo chamber.Right now it's some conservatives and extreme leftists who are censored by twitter, Facebook and so on. We have a better platform that actually empowers the users. We must let people know that this exists, and explain them how it works.
-
@sean point is, if normal People who feel oppressed by twitter and Facebook only know that gab exists as an alternative, they'll go to gab. We have something better than gab! For the alt-right, for the tankies, but also for normal progressives, conservatives and everyone else. But people don't know, and it's our problem and fault.
-
@lain @sean what is there to to be done about it, then? (sorry, that sounds aggressive, but don't mean it to be at all XX; just curious you have an opinion
-
@shmibs @sean I think we need to build our own gabs (with less retardation) and anti-gabs. And to do that we need no make it a few orders of magnitude easier to host instances. Alex g is working in a hosting service, I think that's a step in the right direction.
-
@lain @sean mmmkay. i mean like letting people know this here actually exists, though. active efforts of some kind to "reach out"?, or word-of-mouth, or
-
@shmibs @sean reach out. I don't know how to it yet. But recently we had an AP conf. It was good, it's fun to meet all the AP people and the things we talk about are good. But it's completely removed from any "normie" user. My mother should use Pleroma and not know that she's doing it! That's what we need to achieve!

@icedquinn @lain @sean am a third party, but saw and remember here was to the effect of:- gab starts federating- lot of "mastodon" servers immediately defederate, so they have no involvement in what happens later- a few high-profile "pleroma" servers (FSE etc), by contrast, actively interact with gab users- what's-his-name gab-in-charge-person (gicp) gets upset because the people he's federating with disagree with his self-aggrandising, say mean things, and post pictures of cute 女装子- gicp has (still in-beta) gab defederate from fse, posting an extremely weird explain-o-video ending with "your whole fucking mentality is expired ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA bye"- becomes a meme- gab eventually switches from "beta" to "release"; fse-block is dropped here, i think? not sure- interactions continue this way, a few "pleroma" users amusing themselves poking fun at "gab people", posting lots of animu and gayboys, etc- gab breaks federation (i think accidentally? and maybe only with pleroma instances?). then gicp decides to make it permanent because "pleroma" is "lispy, queer shit" or somethingmight be wrong with details above, but that was at least the general pattern
-
@lain @sean is there evidence of a better reason :blobcatwhatsthis:
-
@icedquinn @sean that's a common explanation but it's not true
-
@lain @sean i thought they left because fedi was being thoroughly shit and blocking them.
-
@icedquinn @lain @sean yes
-
@shmibs @lain @sean is that where the expired mentality meme came from
-
@lain @sean mmm mmm ^^then will try also to help here ♥
