Hector [EUnomia score: -84%]https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/10/20-0948_article> The general public should be educated about mask use because cloth masks may give users a false sense of protection because of their limited protection against acquiring infection (16). Correctly putting on and taking off cloth masks improves protection (Table). Taking a mask off is a high-risk process (34) because pathogens may be present on the outer surface of the mask and may result in self-contamination during removal (31).So assuming some level of mask effectiveness, what's the point of me wearing a mask as I walk into a restaurant, only to remove it once I sit down to eat, given the above? Nothing, that's what. It's pure theater.> To our knowledge, only 1 randomized controlled trial (4) has been conducted to examine the efficacy of cloth masks in healthcare settings, and the results do not favor use of cloth masks.Case in point. The evidence is not there. All the rest is anecdotal. Arresting and fining people based on anecdote and conjecture is both anti-science and immoral. Cloth mask mandates are unconstitutional, immoral, and ineffective until proven otherwise.
@Moon@hector mmm, cloth is better than nothing at holding in your micro-spits, glasses would not fog up otherwise etc. there's a psychological component here too, though, justifying even the seemingly dumb/symbolic stuff. consider how everyone who uses a firearm is trained to never point it at people. the rule is never taught situationally; it doesn't matter if the gun is not loaded or half-assembled or whatever else. in a situation when the bad outcome is someone dying or being maimed, it's good to err on the side symbolic conscientiousness. it helps you and everyone around you to avoid slipping into negligent behaviour
@hector Mask is about protecting other people, not so much yourself.>what's the point of me wearing a mask as I walk into a restaurant, only to remove it once I sit down to eat, given the above? Nothing, that's what. It's pure theater. There is an acknowledgement that perfect safety is impossible, I don't think it's fair to hold it against the mandate when it is flexible because of necessity.>Cloth mask mandates are unconstitutionalYou can be compelled to do a lot of stuff if it's put into a law. The Constitution doesn't protect you from stupid laws per se.
@Moon an edict saying I must wear a mask because I might be infected is in the same category as one saying I must wear a yellow armband because I might be a terrorist. Wearing an armband does no harm, you could argue, so why not just do it? Because there is no due process involved and no way for me to appeal this result which paints me as a menace to society without any specific evidence. When the government makes unjust edicts and laws it is the duty of the people to refuse.
@shmibs@hector I should probably clarify that I think terror watchlists are pretty garbage, but just like to remind people how far-gone as a country we are down that road. I've read quite a bit about the relationship between public health and due process, public health isn't "immune" (lol) from due process, but it has a lot of leeway.
