@Nightingalle @shpuld US entered the war for performative reasons; staying out was the plan, but citizens had to be appeased after the hawaii thingfirebombings at least had a "reason" at least, mmm, war infrastructure that couldn't be otherwise targeted, matches up with dresden etc, but the two giant bombs after that were pretty much just symbolic-murderdoesn't mean japan's armies weren't off elsewhere doing the murder-rape-enslave thing, sure, but US didn't really care about that, "someone else's problem"

@shpuld wars in general aren’t always like that, but this one was not a general one. The invading party got themselves in a bad place, it’s hard to say what kind of retaliation they may get. It’s silly to demand justification with wars, I agree that cruel revenge is not the wisest thing, but putting hindsight apart, I’m pretty sure back in the day some people believed that even the cruelest revenges still won’t be enough to soothe their grief and rage from loss. And they’d be right think so. It’s hard for irreverent people to understand perhaps. Still it would be nice to avoid all cruelty, just when you are really in a war, things are not that easy.

@Nightingalle I didn't mean to say imperial japan was justified in entering the war, but just wars in general are not always like thatone atrocity doesn't justify another atrocity in revenge

@shpuld just as I don’t see how anyone can justify one country sending out armies to invade and slaughter through another country, killing countless civilians along their path. I don’t think that kind of atrocity was “forced”. I didn’t say that the people died in the bombing were for a good reason, no one wants it that way. It’s obviously tragic, but not anymore tragic than the people from other countries, which were killed by invader’s mistakes in the first place. Tokyo is simply not the place that deserve the most sentiments.

@Nightingalle wars happen for various reasons, often nations are forced into them. but I don't see how anyone can justify targeting civilian centers even if the purpose is to end the war by forcing the enemy to surrender.

@shpuld wars aren’t justifiable in the first place, especially for the party that chose to invade others at first. As for civilians they always become tragic collateral damage, not only the Japanese ones deserve compassion. Good thing that we live in a more peaceful era now

seeing the damage done in the tokyo bombings, makes you think who greenlit these sort of massive attacks on civilian population centers? how do you justify something like that?
