halcy:icosahedron: (halcy@icosahedron.website)'s status on Thursday, 30-Aug-2018 00:43:05 JST halcy:icosahedron: @revenant @jk my fave weird town name is actually "weil der stadt" which sounds like somebody messed up grammar trying to say "because of the city" but actually it's properly originally "weil, der stadt" which is "weil, the city" to differentiate it from the other Weil that is not a city. the grammar is still wrong (would have to be "weil, die stadt"), though - which is because when the name was written down it was usually in the form of "(something happened in) weil, der stadt". and that stuck.

halcy:icosahedron: (halcy@icosahedron.website)'s status on Thursday, 30-Aug-2018 01:21:12 JST halcy:icosahedron: @revenant @jk the city predates german as like, a language and the name originated in its former latin name was “villa” which originally meant just “house” but later came to be used synonymously with “town” so it’s actually properly “town the city” but grammatically wrong in addition to in modern german being “because of the city” but grammatically wrong
everything about the name is amazing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weil_der_Stadt#Etymology
