I don't buy that Mothman had historical precursors, but there is plenty of stories of supernatural beings having startling red eyes. Hundreds of people saw these things in Point Pleasant, kids, clergymen, cops. police were getting 50 reports a night on some nights.

@Moon brains are perpetually dreaming, so "seeing things" happens to most people now and again, and what gets seen tends to be culturally-mediated, once angels and now aliens, and different kinds of aliens depending on the country etc
-
@Moon also memories are necessarily inventive, remembering and imagining are the same process, so vision-memories get tempered to fit the expectations of people hearing the story and giving prompts each time it's told
-
@rizzo @Moon it's kinda scary realising, though, like the "recovered trauma memories" and "alien abduction" people are mostly telling the truth and end up actually going through the same ptsd stuff as if the event really happened
-
@shmibs @Moon big brain take
-
@rizzo @Moon mmmwhy the "it's all in your head" response is so dumb for mental illness stuff too, like it's literally impossible to experience something outside of your head
-
@shmibs @Moon imagine having things happen to you and no one believes you. and worse ridicules you
-
@shmibs @Moon yes that is scary.
