I read something that says from a quantum theory perspective there is no beginning of the universe and the big bang happens on loop.I don't think this concerns me. As other intellectual topics like. Sleeping and petting cats are probably far more useful efforts of brain power. But is this true or does it not matter???

@rizzo don't know what you're referring too, but big bang as "infinitely dense singularity" has never really been taken seriously as it's an extension of general relativity to small scales where it's known not to work. infinities like that pop up in newtonian mechanics too, like if you put two attracting objects infinitely near one another.to me this all indicates that continuity in general is an approximation rather than reality, and there is some discrete lower bound to everything (actually satisfying solution to zeno also), but there is some debate over that still

@rizzo but yeh, "big bang" is basically just "once upon a time stuff was really close together, but now space is all stretched out", without saying anything about whether there was a "beginning" or anything that may have happened before that dense part

@shmibs @rizzo it is a framework for other questions that reach towards the pre-big bang answer. like, what happens if all the mass in the universe combined creates a pull stronger than light can travel?

@rizzo yeh, basically. you can call it just "the beginning of what we can possibly see"

@shmibs kk so there was stuff before the big bang but we don't really know what was there so that's why we say the big bang was the beginning of the universe because that's what we thing all the current universe stuff came from.

@JoYo @rizzo don't get what you're trying to say, but non-homogeneity is one reason people don't take "singularity" seriously

@shmibs @rizzo which part are you asking about?

there’s a lot to think about when you work out of the big-bang theory.

like, if there was a huge bang from a single point in space then wouldn’t everything expand at equal rates of velocity?

if that’s true we should see perfectly even gravity fields and all particals evenly spaced apart.
