@augustus the situation is "you have to use legacy publishing because everybody does, and everybody does because it's legacy". open access and alternative approaches to peer review have been gaining lots of traction in just the last couple of years, though, because of the predatory profit model, incentives against "unremarkable" results, etc
@shmibs my quick searching of the reasons for journals and one of them listed was "it is very good for your career to publish in journals and can be the key to career advancement" which has ominous mafia undertones
