looking back at the “expert says masks bad” thing around europe and us, seems to have had four contributing reasons:
- wear-a-mask-when-you’re-sick not being an established norm like it was in other countries, new things getting questioned more aggressively
- repeatedly asking the wrong question, how to protect self from other rather than thinking of the collective benefit of other-from-self; insert here “western individualism / selfishness” meme
- weird consensus in some epidemiologists that water+virion aerosols can’t float around through the air, which should be clear-up-able with a few experiments but somehow wasn’t
- over-focus on handwashing and surfaces, which is just not knowing virus physiology, that unlike non-enveloped things like norovirus or whatever coronaviruses would degrade quickly when dried out
