looking back at the “expert says masks bad” thing around europe and us, seems to have had four contributing reasons:

    • wear-a-mask-when-you’re-sick not being an established norm like it was in other countries, new things getting questioned more aggressively
    • repeatedly asking the wrong question, how to protect self from other rather than thinking of the collective benefit of other-from-self; insert here “western individualism / selfishness” meme
    • weird consensus in some epidemiologists that water+virion aerosols can’t float around through the air, which should be clear-up-able with a few experiments but somehow wasn’t
    • over-focus on handwashing and surfaces, which is just not knowing virus physiology, that unlike non-enveloped things like norovirus or whatever coronaviruses would degrade quickly when dried out

@moth_ball ah, i don't mean that part, but rather like february last year, us, uk, germany etc all news and celebrity-experts were saying that "mask doesn't help and can make things worse"

@shmibs Around here in Finland at least the masks never became some partisan issue after people got used to them, but that's probably because people here in general have pretty good trust in public news and private news (tabloids/TV channels etc) went along with all the regulations instead of sowing doubt in people. I guess we're also somewhat conditioned to "not cause trouble" like say, Japan.Which brings me again to the USA media, which does a terrible job giving any sort of information in a simple and understandable way, because it doesn't even try to. Instead people choose between channels like alternate realities and are content to be angry with the other side. Then there's France where people are so strong willed that they had to strong arm people to stay inside with big penalties.

@moth_ball mmm, it seems so long agoofficial policies were "shouldn't wear them", though, and even some hospital workers were punished for doing etc. was very strange

@shmibs Oh, I don't remember reading anything like that, must have missed it I do remember articles in the news differentiating between the common masks and respirator masks that actually protect the user. At least here there wasn't really a period of doubting the masks, but that probably is due to people being obedient about regulations in general.

@Moon maybe that's his excuse or maybe he really thought so at the time, but people were really mixed up and not thinking generally then it seems, so blaming it entirely on that doesn't really fit, others going along

@shmibs fauci told people that masks didn't work, then later admitted he said no to the masks because he was afraid people would use them up and medical workers could not get them. He probably intentionally conflated these two reasons, his excuse was the science changed on him rapidly or something.

@Moon true, but the other stuff, like the weird "aerosols can't float!" insistence and the "masks worse than useless" policy in the uk, predated cv19, and being worked up about surface transmission as most important is not knowing how viruses work

@shmibs I just think that a lot of influence is concentrated in one job which is his job, he does seem to be very well-connected to important people in medicine, that part of his job he does really well.

@Moon like, if he's saying that masks would have run out, then why would that be the case?, and think that's the four reasons above convincing people not to take them seriously
