@rizzo @chuculate but yes pretty soon after church fathers wanted to cut away the idea of some pre-god chaos state favoring a springing forth out of nothingness which is less fun but might be more 'correct' to people (as in, similar to the unfolding of time, space, ontology itself from a 0-dimensional original big bang)

@rizzo @chuculate the idea of god is just trying to solve the idea of What Was The First Thing so if god had a dad that wasn't also god then the idea of god would be kind of pointless. i agree that it's not super fun though, something like the primordial chaos of greek myth is way more evocative. to be fair genesis also describes an evocative primordial chaotic state but it tends to be kind of overlooked. > 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. @rats @chuculate @rizzo @Moon my bet on this is the "space is just an emergent behaviour of stuff interacting" bitlike at the smallest some kinda teeny tiny space-nodes coupling and decoupling from each other, allows for the "non-locality" in entanglement, tunnelling etc

@rats @chuculate @rizzo @mystik @Moon intuition here is just like " 'speed of light' is just the stuff-interacting 'rate' ""experienced time" is stuff self-interacting, so in order to think "wow, i am moving very quickly", to "feel time passing", you need to have information bouncing around here and there within the brain. so you get time dilation/constant perception of light speed, because the more interactions are dedicated to "propagate the pattern in that direction" the fewer can be dedicated to "have the pattern self-interact"

@mystik @shmibs @Moon @chuculate @rizzo basically, light in a vacuum always moves at the same speed and nothing can move faster than it. this is true for some reasonin physics, the laws you can use to describe a situation will be agreeable to everyone, even if someone is standing still and another person is riding by on a razor scooterbut there's an important distinction that the person on the razor scooter needs to be moving at a constant speed. if you are riding by in a really cool car that is accelerating super fast while someone on the sidewalk bounces a ball, you can't come to agreement about the phenomena that you are witnessing. assume that the person in a car is not aware that they are in a car, just watching things out the window. he sees someone bounce a ball and then watches it arc in a weird way, and he doesn't know why because he doesn't realize that from his point of view he's moving faster and faster maybe a clearer image: two cars both going a constant speed, one going 30mph and one going 40mph, will be able to tell that each other is going a constant speed. if you're in a car that is slowly going faster and faster, you can't really tell which if you is accelerating and which is at a constant speed. maybe both of you are changing speeds? so, we can say: everyone who is moving the same speed will agree with each other on the speed of light. everyone accelerating will not agree with those people. imagine one of the cars above has "the speed of light" spray painted on the side of itthis is important i promise im getting to the juicy stuffbecause velocity or "the rate of travel" of something has become an important fundamental constant in physics, thanks to the speed of light being defined in this way, this ties space and time together fundamentally. anyway, einstein pointed out that gravity acting on you is the same thing as being in a car that's going faster and faster. this vaguely makes sense to me if i don't try and think about it too hard. i have no fucking idea how he did this. i super vaguely remember some of this stuff because i was a physics major and read "a brief history of time" and "the new cosmic onion" for school once, but i dont remember that. at all.anyway, time is effectively defined by the speed of light, since this is the most fundamental universal constant we have for something that happens over a period of time. when you are in a gravitational field, this causes your perception of the speed of light to be different from people not in a gravitational field. since space and time are properties subject to similar principles, this also effects space. this is what i was alluding to by my joke "spacetime is a dental dam" above, since people usually visualize spacetime as being a rubber sheet with massive things like planets sitting on it and warping itthis is the best i can do. i haven't thought a lot about this stuff in detail for like a decade and had to do some refreshing
