christmas carol is like the inverted version of that fable about the lazy grasshopper. yeah, don't be an industrious ant who squirrels away his food for the coming winter, that's like Scrooge, he's a cunt, just be a lazy feckless grasshopper and profligate spender of other people's money and then use emotional bullying on people like Scrooge to get him to pay your way through the winter
-
@lain @augustus he has a big-fancy-house full of big-fancy-things...but the actual story-point is kinda more that "money-obsession is very bad for you mmkay; go out and connect with other humans personally and you will be fulfilled. care for them and they will care for you in turn, and there will be a little more love in the world". money makes strangers and friendly friendship makes friendshere now together.jpg
-
@augustus This is literally true, he's the most altruistic you can possibly be, because he gives people something (whatever that is) and they pay him with money, but he never gets anything from them because he's so miserly. If he hated giving away his money so much that he'd just burn it just before he dies, he'd have worked for free all the time!

Scrooge did nothing wrong
-
@shmibs @lain Scrooge was a true autist and nerd who dedicated his life to becoming successful in business, and found himself in a position of being hated for pursuing this goal. it's not his fault the surplus populations of London were starving. just let the man enjoy his freaking money
-
@augustus @lain he didn't enjoy his money. that was the point
-
@augustus @lain marley: "i spent all my life sitting alone in this tiny little room and now have a mountain of regrets that cannot be fulfilled"past: "see, you used to have fun together with people wasn't that nice? whatever happened to those days?"present: "these people around you right now would be better off if you went out to be with them, and you would be better off as well"future: "if you don't quit your hikikomori ways you're going to die sad and alone, you know"
-
@shmibs @lain only after he was coerced by a bunch of socialist ghosts
-
@augustus @lain chain made by inactions, what he fails to say or dothe thing with dickens was he believed very strongly in capitalism and hierarchies and industrial society (and child labour) as "inevitable and right" and was just annoyed at the individuals in it for acting immorally at a personal level. "if only the rich would act a little more human then the whole world would be right"why he includes fezziwig, "rich guys it's fine to have a lot of money and stuff, only be more like this dude and have fun and be nice about it"
-
@shmibs @lain you're doomed Scrooge, doomed for all time! your future is a horror story written by your crimes. your chains are formed by what you say and do. so have your fun, when day is done, a nightmare waits for you!
-
@augustus @lain he was a child labourer himself. same deal, "it's fine, just be humane about it. everyone quit treating each other like garbage please"
-
@shmibs @lain saying Dickens is pro-child labour is just trolling me on another level
