the higher education system in the US is such a fucking sham
-
@xj9 my school did not rank its students luckily, it sounds horrid
-
@nik somehow i managed top 10% of my school while also sleeping in class every day.
-
@nik really loved the opportunities it provided, but without a scholarship would've been kind of impossible, yeh; need to figure out some kind of admin-light online system that still counts as "official university" but pays teachers more directly instead of the thousands and thousands for boss' boss' boss or whatever
-
@nik managing teacher drama sucks, though; father did the department head thing for a while and had to stop because it's apparently like dealing with undergrad excuse-making "my grandmother died and i'm sorry sir but a D is unacceptable" stuff but worse XXmaybe would be less fighting at least with online teaching, though

@xj9 i just absolutely hated the soul crushing feeling of "if you don't get good grades in high school you will get into a shitty college and then FAIL AT LIFE" pushed by parents and teachers alike, because my mental health literally did not let me get good grades despite having the whatever "smarts" necessaryi was one of like 8 people in my 700 person class that didn't go to uni, shit is whack. and every step of the way people (incl some of the most supportive teachers i had) derided me for making a "mistake"
-
@nik that is nice though. i never felt much pressure from the ranking thing, personally, but it isn't very nice to compete for grades when its mostly a cutoff + SAT/ACT score that matters for uni applications.
-
@nik y’all didn’t do GPA rankings? that’s how we pick valedictorian and qualify for state uni scholarships. i went out of state, but i did qualify for a tuition scholarship because of my grades. (Texas)

@xj9 nope. we had GPAs but no ranks, no valedictorian. you could get special scholarships via application and also sometimes standardized testing (psat).
