jesus said so much anti wealth shit but evangelical christians go straight to "the poor will always be with us" isn't that convenient
-
@Moon @georgia pretty clear at least that "chasing the money is an active hindrance to me-following"
-
@georgia it is an absolute requirement for believers to care for the poor (this means personally, not through compulsory taxes.) Anyone who denies this either verbally or functionally has failed terribly. There is contradictory scriptural evidence that being wealthy is bad. At worst though it is a sign you're not doing enough.
-
@shmibs @georgia it is, but on the other hand God made Job wealthy (after He killed Job's family)
-
@Moon @georgia if anything, story-of-job is about ineffability and wat and nothing-makes-sense, a response to natural disasters hurting everyone. saw so many preacherguys try to turn it into "see, job did this wrong and that's why things happened", but that's explicitly ruled out by god confirming over and over "he's righteous" and job's friends who try to explain things away as causal all being foolish (extra fourth friend is a later addition to the text)which is to say that him getting wealthy doesn't really have anything to do with anything
-
@Moon @georgia the point of job directly contradicts new-testament jesus and his gospel of "doing good works will result in good things for you"
-
@shmibs @georgia I understand what it really was about (and its history and later modification) but nothing in the particulars of the story contradicted other scripture to make its point so we can tease out other lessons.
-
@Moon @georgia (which is then directly contradicted in turn by paul's believe-only
-
@Moon @georgia take up your cross and follow me etc. do good works or you will go to hell41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
-
@shmibs @georgia always interpreted this as spiritual gifts
-
@Moon @georgia job didn't have a next life
-
@shmibs @georgia you're not promised good things in this life, where's the contradiction
