   Good morning, friends.

   Today my Middle School Media Arts students begin a project where they must incorporate media they do not own from 3 sources into their videos, all without infringing on anyone's copyright.

   Because I don't care what Banksy & Picasso said, good artists don't steal from other artists.

     @crash You have an exciting class. It isn't easy to create new productions without infringing on copyrights, but it is essential to do so educationally.

     I'm creating a room on matrix called ICT for education. The purpose is to interact with teachers from all over the world. Unfortunately, there are no participants yet.Do you have a matrix account?

     @crash there is no difference between derivation and reuse. the words mean the same thing..try writing a victorian novel without biblical allusions, 平安 poem without borrowing from other poets / 物語 and communcal vocabulary (枕詞 etcancient myth grew and developed through clever people inventing fanfictions of their favourite characters. today this is impossible because "spiderman is someone's property"copyright culture is stifling and toxic

     @shmibs Derivative, sure, but there's a difference between derivation and reuse.

     Reuse requires permission, because otherwise any corporation could just take the works of artists and use them without paying the artists.

     So my students may not earn a living with the skills I teach them.

     Copyright abolishment will benefit those in power (the corporations) far more than those striving to live.

     The large businesses have the infrastructure to steal from smaller artists wholesale, and only the cost of litigation prevents them from doing it more.

     Copyright needs reform, but I can't support anyone who sides against my students.

     @crash wonder then, hmmm, is why is just anti-plagiarism or so not plenty?, a mechanism by which avoid people directly copy whole work and present it as own without any attributionthen, if someone becomes a success with using something from you, then it's publicity for you as well, and more people can come to find you (mostly possible now because internetand big companies are far less competitive in art space than small independents can be. all hollywood movies and "aaa" games and so on are horrible because they're too big to fail, and so have to target the entire world at once as audience, pleasing nobody. if any girl on tumblr can draw graphic novel with her favourite characters then the conservative centralised company won't be able to keep upand thank you! it was a pretty nice day; made together and ate some lemon curd cake, and then i received as a present this book http://rabihalameddine.com/the-wrong-end-of-the-telescopenot yet read, but his others are all very nice, so this must be as well...and realised over again how amazing a person boyfriend is >_<

     @shmibs The companies do that because they of course don't want others to do to them what they would like to do to others.

     But if we endorse wholesale theft, they have the arsenal that will allow them to survive.
