civ 6 expansion has 'corporate libertarianism' as a last-level form of government but as far as i can tell it just means amazon with an army

@lain speaking about, wonder thoughts of US already having largest private police force and growing (outnumbering state police), and how well that seems to workor arbitrationor private prisons

@lain hmmm, do https://definitions.uslegal.com/c/campus-police/ not count? have those on just about every campusand wondering how any such liability is expected to come about. arbitration, for example, currently it seems to be:- corporation sneaks submit-to-arbitration clause into a contract- corporation employs their own arbitrators, who lean towards deciding in their favour- customer generally loses case, has to pay opponent's legal fees, etc- corporation never suffers any backlash; nobody cares

@shmibs I don't know much about the American system in this case. I think arbitration is generally a good idea. I don't think there are "real" private police and prisons here in the sense that I'd envision a pure-market variant (that is, with competition between different security providers, proper liability for things like murders done by police, prisons competing for criminals because they are a valuable resource, the criminals being able to select prisons, etc...).

@shmibs @lain “private” prisons only have one customer, the government. They could not exist without the government, and do not operate in a market whatsoever.

No private security force resembles private police, the joke here about private security is that they can do little besides yell at you and call the “real” police.

I’ve never dealt with private arbitration but it’s a direct response to the inefficiencies of government courts.

@lain mmm, maybe am stupid, but it seems like this is basically just the situation described. customers asked to voluntarily sign a contract to use services -> 1000 contracts for 1000 services means nobody ever reads them -> contract writer gets away with doing whatever, and broader public doesn't care that a few people are crushed now and again due to company negligenceand the alternative is one contract broadly applied, at which point you're back to having state again

@shmibs my general thoughts about this topic come mostly from https://mises.org/library/chaos-theory-two-essays-market-anarchy-0Not really sure what campus police is supposed to be. Either way, if you do injustice it doesn't matter if you do it with state employees or if you hire a private company to do it for you.

@shmibs @lain many, many universities are government run in the first place, and if they’re commissioned police officers per your link, then it’s hard to call them entirely private.

Either way, they kill a lot fewer innocent people than government police do.
