I wanted to learn how you prevent dying from drowning if you somehow end up in water and all the advice is like bad computer advice "stay away from the water"

@Moon - not lifesaving advice -is the cold going kill you? keep your body moving, try and overcome cold shock by staying as calm as possible and focusing on just moving your body. Constantly evaluate if you are starting to lose it and try to compare your current situation with a minute or 3 ago. assuming the cold wont kill you and rescue will come over a long time - lay on your back as much as possible to conserve energy for as long as possible, if there is any buoyant piece of anything around you (life vest, O ring, large pieces of wood), either hold on to it, or even climb on it if applicable.if wearing clothes, backpacks, anything that's not your body, take em off (if you can do that without panicking!!!), you will gain buoyancy. (unless they are watertight/waterholding diving clothes in the cold, those might keep you warmer in the long run!)if you fall off a bridge or similar high object (top floor of a huge ship, whatever) - make yourself pencil shaped, feet down! The impact WILL kill/maim you otherwise! straighten your legs, point down your feet , and move your arms straight up (arms flat on your side is also acceptable). You will fall pretty deep down in the water, focus and swim up, do not pass out. You already succeeded in not exploding your inner organs by properly shaping your body to avoid water impact from killing you, now fainting from water pressure and cold shock can kill you immediately. If you make it back up to the surface, dont over do it, casually swim towards the safety of the river coast, the combined shock of impact, cold and pressure with a strong physical exertion might cause you to cramp up, its okay, stay calm after making it to the surface and take your time.if you cant swim, well too fucking bad, time to start practicing today. without a buoyant object you cant survive on your own if you cant swim. oh yeah, and SCREAM if you are on top of water.
