The most important factor in the Amish success I think is that they have a built-in "burn-off" process. Normally violations of Amish norms results in social correction through things like shunning. However for youth these rules are significantly relaxed. Youths approaching adulthood are given the chance to experience the broader world, and finally to choose of their free will to remain in the community or to leave. 90+% of Amish teenagers choose to stay, and are then baptized formally as a member of the Amish Church. The result of this is over time they form a dense mass of hardcore members while anyone unhappy just leaves.
