     @shmibs water is also more critical than diamonds, but still most people would rather have a diamond ring than another bottle of water (except hakui)

     @lain books (and storytelling more broadly) are necessities that help human children to become-educated and not-be-dead. genuine vs. synthetic diamond is marketing scheme to get people to pay more for the same thing, tearing up the ground in the process.

     @shmibs you can take something that you personally don't dislike to do the same comparison, books are (generally) more expensive than water bottles too

     @orekix @lain sure, but without early education in reading etc, people tend not to make it to the self-teaching stage. (some of the teachers are parents and have to pay to do that work themselveswhether succeeding or not is another issue; reading education going downhill

     @Upjohn94 @lain "education system is currently failing" does not make it less necessaryand of course there are a few programming positions that are critical to people not dying and things not exploding. "average", though, is still making throwaway websites or whatever for money-grab company that will disappear in a year or two

     I’d argue a software engineer is more critical to modern society than a teacher tbh.

     Firefighter yeah those provide an essential service to society.

     But the modern education system is a joke and people who go into teaching most commonly do it because they have chosen useless degrees that can’t get them any other jobs.

     Many are also useless at actually doing their jobs as well. I had to tell my IT teacher how to use the software they were meant to be showing us how to use.

     The old adage rings true in my experience:

     “Those who can do, do. Those who can’t, teach.”

     In any case, the market sets the game. If you can make more money as a computer engineer than as a teacher it’s because society as a whole collectively decided they have more value. This is not due to politicians or anyone else’s opinion, it’s a natural process.

     I am of course a little biased but it is perfectly logical to me: we live in a world dependent on technology and without computers society would collapse.
