    Software may be immaterial, but it runs on hardware and determines its energy consumption. Making software energy efficient is crucial. Let's build energy-efficient Free Software together!

      @DiabolusAlbus @PINE64 No one is forcing anyone to do anything. KDE Eco aims to provide project managers and developers a clear series of guidelines and tools that help figure out how to make their code more energy-efficient, is all.

      Whether they then decide to submit their work for certification or not is entirely up to them.

      @kde @PINE64 „1. Measure 2. Analyze 3. Certify“ - Really? Are you aware that no problem ever has been resolved by transforming it into a Compliance problem? In my experience turning to Compliance usually means giving up to try solving the problem. This can be observed from InfoSec to CoVid-19 and many more. If you really care to make code energy efficient, you have to find a way to make it attractive to write efficient code.

      BTW Congratulations for your video, it has a real “enterprise” vibe!

      You are right @pet84rik .

      KDE Eco will hopefully start a trend that would ideally reach all kinds of software: apps, frameworks, servers, and, yes, web platforms and applications.

      The project is just starting, though, so we are concentrating on what we know about best first, and that is our own software.

      @kde But not only "desktop software". We are all using web services today, so it is also very important to make those less energy hungry. I saw a list of internet services with their impact on CO2 emmisions and it was terrible. A single PC is literally nothing compared to that.

      @pet84rik @kde

      These are exactly the conversations KDE Eco wants to push! For instance, at our last community meetup the Umwelt Campus Birkenfeld lead a discussion on measuring the energy consumption of distributed systems (client-server, P2P). You can learn more about this work at their website:

      https://www.umwelt-campus.de/en/green-software-engineering/refoplan-20

      All are invited to join the KDE Eco conversation through multiple channels:

      https://eco.kde.org/get-involved/

      We'd love to have you join!
