@FloatingGhost whorfianism discredited is bad linguist memeis true related studies have been looking for influence in exactly the wrong place, though, focussing on "basic vocabulary" rather than the high-level abstract jargon stuff take any two language people and a word for "tree" or so will probably be similar given they're assigning a value to the same object, but only to the theoretical computer scientist is that tree a computer

ok so I haven't been able to find anyone online that really puts my grievances with this film into words, and it's been stuck in my head so time to writeso, the core premise of the film is that time is non-linear - causation does not exist, every point of time exists and always will exist, linearity is an illusionis this an interesting thought experiment? surebut from a narrative perspective, what does it do? it sucks all tension from your story. let's say we get invested in the plight of our main characters - and then learn 3/4 of the way through that their plight doesn't exist because it's a certainty that they'll succeed. the rest of the film is so much sawdust filling at that point - who cares how they do it? we know they'll manage it since it's logically impossible that they don'tI'm even willing to suspend disbelief that a stronger version of the already discredited strong sapir-whorf hypothesis existsbut sucking all narrative tension out of the story isn't enough for our screenwriter oh no they need a romance subplot! we already know the conclusion of it so why should we care? every minute thing is already planned out, so "meeting" your husband isn't even "important" since it was predeterminedand then there's the Chinese guy. heck this entire scene. from his linear perspective, what motivation does he have to tell the main character everything she needs to know in order to meet the guy in order to be told that information? that is just left as an exercise for the watcher. he has none.GAH it's frustrating even nowthe whole film leaves you with one of two conclusions - either this was all predetermined and thus a waste of time with no actual tension, or it's variable and information can travel backwards in time (since variable implies current state affects later state)I don't like it
