@Moon i think it's necessarily so, as the alternative would imply strong emergence (lower-level detail that's not in any way at all represented reflected in higher-level phenomena), and that would mean a lower bound for our analysis and simulations as wellcan be systems that are *nearly* emergent in that way, like running simulations on a modern computer is designed to be, but still don't have closed systems to keep out the random cosmic radiation and things. and anything we could use to analyse the weather would need to be outside-looking-in, implying open system (otherwise it would need to be part of the system and model itself inside itself
