     @Moon @lain @Hyolobrika experience here has been that like the 80s~90s brand christian extremism was mostly people who hated everyone but also felt guilty about it because trying to take literally jesus teachings, while the "internet guy" version that just hates everyone shamelessly has maybe been around, but is now getting more popular and colonising that older sincere-insincere as people are internet moreand yeh, former one was pro-jews because "bible said

     @lain @Moon my dad (a non-practising Jew) makes subtle digs at Christians sometimes, follows a Hindu guru, and thinks "all religions are paths to God". many people I've met online who are probably Christians absolutely do not think positively of the Jews, and completely unsubtly. I've known two Christian families IRL and I don't remember what they thought of Jews. my mother's father (a lapsed Christian) said something about Jews that my dad got offended by at a dinner once that I didn't hear

     @Hyolobrika @lain There is a massive difference between the Christians I have known IRL as a practicing Christian, and Christians I have seen online. I have known exactly one family IRL that were anti-Semitic (and not openly) I don't think it's simply people online being more honest.

     @Moon @lain @Hyolobrika of those decades going from one to next christian-extremist churches and gatherings and stuff, don't think they were really mostly "rotten people" wouldn't say, but more like if the term cognitive dissonance is ever to have a useful application would be there, have constantly repeating "need to do the things the book says, need to be consistent, need to do" but not really actually believing it, so trying to force themselves into doing leads to growing growing uncomfy, like the whole "porn addiction" phenomenon, so would get to a breaking point every now and then of saying very rude things to strangers or getting mad and hitting someone and then lots of mea-culpa afterwards. or in the case of discovering has the gay kid, becomes an outlet for anger and beating them up, kicking them out or so, then feeling bad afterwards sometimes so far as to paper over memories of what actually happened and invent a new narrative where "none of that happened actually, and i'm the good guy waiting patiently for you to realise the error of your ways"very interesting contrast actually, was just reading this girl talks about she did ethnography stuff in tajikistan just before and after soviet collapse, and talking about how other cultures can avoid that sort of dissonance so like "muslim" and "communist" fit together2022-1650336508.png2022-1650336557.png

     @shmibs @lain @Hyolobrika basically I have never met a Christian who only liked Jews because they had to mostly die to fulfil prophecy, which is the overwhelming interpretation of their motives that I see online. I have a lot of negative experiences of Christians going back to childhood so yeah I am very aware that a lot of them are rotten people and I don't totally know why they gravitated to being such a strong christian

     @shmibs @lain @Hyolobrika I think we talked about this before and have had pretty similar experiences. For vrious reasons I have tried out many denominations but baptists were the worst.
