@Moon @taylan @kaia sabine is a very smart woman, but she overplays the internet contrarian position for effect, and sometimes a little sloppily (good to have someone play that role, though, counter all the "true believersbut her book is good!, worth readingand for mars, beyond just the problem of getting people there and not deadly-irradiated and insane, there's also gravity disparity and lack of magnetosphere/atmosphere shielding meaning you'd need to live trapped in like an underground centrifuge and watch for coronal ejectionsthen the question of why you even bothered using all those resources to get here etc
-
@taylan @kaia I'll watch it, thanks. I'm always interested in the opinion of people with domain knowledge since I don't have any.
-
@Moon @kaia Sabine Hossenfelder has a really nice video on why Mars colonization is a fairly absurd pipe dream.(She's a highly experienced no-bullshit physicist and her arguments are based purely on scientific considerations, not anything political. I can only recommend.)
-
@taylan @kaia I know this opinion could be written off as an unrealistic solution that prevents a realistic solution from happening so nothing happens. I just, well, we went to the moon in the 60s we should have already been populating Mars by now.
-
@taylan @kaia I don't believe we will solve any problems by depopulating, I believe problems get solved through increased specialization as population grows. We should be planning to populate space so we can grow without turning the planet into a hellscape.
-
@Moon @kaia Don't think that's a novel realization. :blobcatjoy: Humans really need to depopulate quite a bit. We're an invasive species.I heard one of the best ways to decrease birth rates is to improve women's rights. Comes out that when they have human rights, education, and therefore proper chances in life, it's less likely that they will end up being used as a baby machine by some backwards guy who wants to have lots of minions.Pretty smart really. Two birds with one stone.
-
@kaia it turns out the destructive environmental threat was us all along
-
@Moon yeah true. and solar energy covers farm land, wind generators are loud, unseemly and kill birds.... :airisigh:
-
@kaia damming up rivers I guess destroys habitat of everything downstream
-
@Moon @taylan @kaia the lost bone mass / muscular atrophy / heart-turning-into-a-blob is a huge problem for brief stint astronauts as is, and mars is like 40% surface gravity was it?
-
@shmibs @taylan @kaia is the gravity issue that bad, I know you could never come back to earth without your lungs collapsing though
-
@Moon @taylan @kaia they do the same thing, just like wasting when you stay in bed too long except worse for your heart because blood-pumping anticipates gravity to work against
-
@shmibs @kaia @taylan just do jumping jacks and take vitamins
-
@shmibs @taylan @kaia I just wasn't sure if the problem was zero gravity or less gravity.
