@augustus you can argue that they got replaced/changed shape, initially with star forts (design protects against cannons much more effectively, less high walls so less chance of collapsing after getting hit by a big cannon shell, less high towers and ditto; longer, angled walls so you could put more troops and bigger cannons per wall per direction, and angled walls also = angled armor, so less penetration power from attacking cannons), 1900s+ later into underground bunkers and concrete emplacements (artillery and airplanes drop death and war crimes from above, gotta protect from above too now)
so star-forts are semi modern castles
and for modern society, concrete emplacements/bunkers are truly modern castles (flak tower lmfao), however because function and (re-)building time is so critical for modern bunkers, they are all function, no aesthetics. pre-building defences is a waste of resources due to the mobility aspect of modern war (vehicles n paratroopers n shit), unless you can pre-build in 360-degrees around every single area you wish to deny

what exactly is the reason that castles died out as an efficient means of territorial defense? are they just shit? or did lazy americans not have the ability to construct them when conquering wild west
