Hello everyone.
I am going to be retiring from the fediverse, twitter, and HN at the end of this year. I will try and post here new year's eve if I'm not working, and then after that this account will go silent ever afterwards.
I am doing this as I transition myself into the person I want to be and to reinforce my goals of writing more. I am running a decent blog and working on two books, all under my real identity. I am going to be spending 2-3 hrs each day offline entirely, writing, in the new year. I think this will help curb the obsessive doomscrolling habit that I've developed. It is affecting me more than I thought it ever would.
I've enjoyed my time here on the fediverse and I will try and post more than ever before up until the end, but I can no longer ignore how drastically toxic this social media has become.
I don't say this as a mark to any particular staff, but just as an observation upon the collective of fediverse users around the world. I'm no longer okay seeing such hyperconservative takes and calls to violence, blatant bigotry and racism, and all of this sort of thing. I celebrate the fediverse as a facility for free speech, and I am truly grateful that there are people putting work into the technological ecosystem underpinning it but again, I just no longer feel the desire to participate in it or expose myself to it. I fear widespread violence in my country in 2024 and maybe even after midterms. I feel that social media, a cabal from which even the fediverse is not excluded, is primarily to blame for both the increasead radicalization and polarization in my country, as well as the increase in the rate of speed at which these effects are happening.
I'm looking forward to the next few months shitposting with you all. It truly is my pleasure to have been here.
