@Moon if its a very malevolent act by russia, they can absolutely blow it up if they want to. if not, then the pipeline will just empty up eventually, releasing a semi significant amount of natural gas into the air (greenhouse gases) and that's gonna be about it. i have no idea how to calculate how much we greenhouse gas this will put into the air in relation to the 5 billion metric tons of carbon we put into the atmosphere each year, but the NUMBERS section below might give a rough answer of "uuuh". one metric cube of natural gas is 0.7 - 0.9 kg/m3.
there's 3 leaks on 2 pipe lines, all at the same time, very large. Someone somewhere really wants those pipes to not exist.
quite large exclusion zones (9km (or 18?) wide circles) around the danger areas.
the leaks are: next to Bornholm island; in the danish economic zone; in the swedish economic zone;
HERES NUMBERS for the case of russia being a malevolent actor
both of the pipes can push through roughly 170 million cubic metres of natural gas per day, russia has a shitload of excess gas, it cant sell it anyway, soooooooooo thats a LOT of natural gas you could blow up.
A cubic metre of natural gas contains approximately 38.3* megajoules per cubic metre (MJ/m3), which is approximately the same amount of energy as a litre of diesel (38.8* Mj/l).
lets say we blow up 6 minute's worth of natural gas from the pipeline at 1 leak, so 6 minutes = 0.4167% of a day 170 000 000 * 0.004167 = 708 390 m3 of gas that gives us 27131337 Megajoules or = 6.4845451720841 Kilotons Of TNT which is like a third of the power of Little Boy nuclear bomb (15 kilotons) detonation scenario wouldnt be catastrophic, but would result in the pipeline being wrecked.
footnote in reference to the very first paragraph: one of the pipes could let into the air 119 million kg of greenhouse gas into the air; assuming full malevolence and pushing gas through the pipe at maximum speed; which could reach our usual yearly amount in ~~42 days. ! However ! Methane is around 100 times stronger as a greenhouse/heat trapping gas than CO2, so again, accurate calculations i cant make here.
the tldr; if there is lots of malevolence involved; explosions and/or significant green house gassing if there's no/little malevolence involved; the pipeline will run dry and we'll just have a long long semi empty pipeline forever at the bottom of the baltic sea, small amount of green house gassing, low chance of small explosions.
sea life who get exposed to this leak will die. total baltic sea biomass will decrease from dead fish, shellfish and other sea flora. assuming not extreme malevolence, it will not be catastrophic, but will be noticable.
@mono@Moon but they already have the gains from this. they're not getting extra gains, nor are they getting a new guarantee of future massive gains they're gaining nothing, the US already has guaranteed EU gas contracts and shipments from waaaaaaayyyyyy months ago ever since the 3 day special military operation went past 3 days
