@jeffcliff they have 100m in surplus and can run off interest forever. Jimbo is a billionaire that runs fandom/wikia for profit being the biggest non social media contributor to the consolidation of the internet. Pretending like they’re broke every six months with a long nag screen is lame.

Wikipedia shouldn’t exist in the first place.

@jeffcliff no, this is surplus. It costs them 15m to run the site and pay all the engineers. Read the WMF financial reports. It all goes towards to useless grift or free r&d for Jimbo Wales for profit enterprises. All of this is just in the report.

Also how tf do you not know what an endowment means. The whole point is to hit a limit where your org is self sustaining through interest and investment and Wikipedia is 100m over that.

@mono 100M won't last forever with their network traffic and with their enemies

they have 100M$/y expenses...even if they cut by 90% they'd still only last a decade without donations

The salaries and grants expand to fit the new budget. They have more money than they know what to do with.

@mono ...you didn't use the term 'endowment' until this post

wikipedia's article on itself shows 100M$ expenses*, if you're claiming their financial reports show less than this then that is curious but I'll have to take your word for it
They also show >200M$ in assets so maybe they could last 20 years+interest

I don't see where their endowment is big enough to be sustainable but, again, I'll have to take your word for it that this is in their financials.
