   Is it just me or is the search function here broken? Is it supposed to search this instance, or federated or what? I get no results, even for very common words. Sorry to bother you @christianp @ColinTheMathmo ?

     @ColinTheMathmo That's a pretty effing disaster because I use Mastodon.social as an archive and cannot even find my own stuff on this instance like I used to. I how hate when admins thing they need to "protect" some adult human beings... and everybody else suffers from the "improvements".

     Search is effectively disabled across all of Mastodon. You can search for people and hashtags, but you cannot search content.

     This was an explicit decision based on how search on other platforms has been abused to enable stalking and harassment.

     It's a difficult balance, discoverability vs "protection".

     There are ways to semi-circumvent it, but broadly, there is no wide-spread search for content, which is why heavy use of #hashtags is encouraged.

     @simsa02 It's a nuanced issue, and there are arguments on both sides. The take-away from this is perhaps that Mastodon instances are not an appropriate place to archive things.

     I'm sorry you feel inconvenienced, but there are other points of view.

     You can always choose to run up your own instance ... there are hosting services that deal with all the admin for you.

     No, I don't think it's an "nuanced issue". For the sake of a few the majority of users suffer inconveniences.

     In fact, Mastodon was a pretty good archiving tool (prior to the changes in search). I used it for topical threads to which I added pieces from time to time. That is pretty much gone now, and the info in part as well.

     With regard to of self-hosting: Those hosting services provide mastodon style instances that do not federate with gnusocial and are of no use to me.
