Just Stop Oil protesters throw tomato soup over Van Gogh's Sunflowers masterpiece
    https://news.sky.com/story/just-stop-oil-protesters-throw-tomato-soup-over-van-goghs-sunflowers-masterpiece-12720183

This has nothing to do with fighting the climate crisis and everything to do with vandals feeling entitled to destroy cultural works, using climate crisis as a justification for their vandalism.

I strongly believe we need radical action to stop the climate catastrophe, but I feel actions like these are *counter-productive*: they make it easy to dismiss all climate activism as "vandalism".

@rysiek That thought had crossed my mind, I mean they could have targeted the Pre Raphelite Brotherhood...

But they just went for the most famous artwork for the publicity.

@rysiek well clearly they aren't art students into Warhol 😏 Or modern pop art.

And to add insult to injury:

      > They threw the contents of two tins of Heinz tomato soup

Seriously? They couldn't even find a can of Campbell's?!

@onepict @rysiek Well, at least they didn't pick a Jackson Pollock painting.

It's quite possible that nobody would have noticed the difference.

      Thanks, I´ll get my coat.

@rysiek or a better one would have been Damien Hirst, given the fact he is burning the planet and some of his works literally.

But no, go after the painting by a dead artist behind glass you cowards.

@rysiek Throwing Cambell's soup on a Warhol painting would at least make some sense.

@trebach @rysiek You'll be unsurprised to learn, then, that Just Stop Oil is funded by Climate Emergency Fund, whose founding donor is Aileen Getty of Getty Oil.

@rysiek If they want to stop oil, they need to disrupt links in the chain, which generally means turning off/blockading oil/pipeline company property.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were hired by associates of the oil industry to make people think all climate protestors are assholes. I mean, I can already think of a few better ways to get their message across involving that painting that doesn't involve damaging the painting itself

      @beetle

Which is not exactly correct, as Aileen Getty is not involved with Getty Oil at all. She has also funded quite a number of progressive causes and been involved in AIDS research, for instance.

Finally, I'll note that the Van Gogh painting that received the tin of soup was protected by an anti-theft security glass. So there is that.
