He seems to confuse mastodon (the software) with ActivityPub (the protocol).

Over on Twitter it's also a struggle against windmills to explain that Mastodon (the software) is not mastodon.social (the instance), and that, accordingly, not all instances using Mastodon (the software) are identical with mastodon.social (the instance). Incredible.

@bkeegan @cfiesler Why do you call it Mastodon (protocol)? Was there an article with that name? If there was, it is erroneous and misleading. There is Mastodon (software) though https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(software)

This is intended to give users the flexibility to select a server whose policies they prefer, but keep access to a larger social network. Mastodon is also part of the Fediverse ensemble of server platforms, which use shared protocols allowing users to also interact with users on other compatible platforms, such as PeerTube and Friendica. Mastodon was originally created by Eugen Rochko and announced on Hacker News in October 2016.The Mastodon mascot is an animal with a trunk, resembling a mastodon or mammoth, sometimes depicted using a tablet or smartphone. Messages posted using the software are known as...

@cfiesler stopped by my data communication class this afternoon and we collaborated to make this chart!

Daily pageviews to the English Wikipedia articles for "Elon Musk" (red), "Twitter" (blue), and "Mastodon (protocol)" (green) since the start of 2022.
