   An Apology for Art

   The art I make is not about communicating. My art is about being communicable, like an infectious disease. I aim to be virulent, not inviting. The audience will invite itself. Or not. I often tag posts #talkingtomyself #lettingyoulisten. A 19th century Hasidic Rabbi said that, 'I'm talking to myself and letting you listen." I repeat it, often, because it encapsulates my relationship to my work and any audience sitting out there in the dark theater of the Nietzchean abyss. 1/

     I sometimes share my art with an audience, but I don't share the meaning of my art. I tend to suppress any explicit meaning, if it's showing. I write poetry, not explanations. Explanation is a kind of diagnosis of the diseases poetry and art, and diagnosis is its own kind of disease, as Karl Krauss points out. As a diagnosed Manic Depressive, I'm fond of saying I am my own disease. Get your own disease. Or make my disease your own. 2/...

     If you are my audience. I mean to salt your brain with mutagenic prions made of dense tangles of imagery and metaphor, and hope for new meaning to self-assemble in the marbled fat under your skullcap--Meaning difficult of diagnosis, that cannot be enveloped in the white pus of explanation, and resistant to the antibodies of curation. I hope not for a cure, but there is no cure. 3/...

     I confess not every poem I write or artwork I create is true to the strictures of inexplicability and ambiguity, of this disease of mutable meaning. I occasionally explain, make explicit, make my meaning known. Sometimes it has to be done. For that I apologize, to my muse and to my audience. 4/end

     Addendum: I also often recall Karl Krauss' aphorism: "I hear noises which others don’t hear and which disturb for me the music of the spheres, which others don’t hear either. Many share my views with me. But I don’t share them with them."
